The Amazon Kindle seemed to burst onto the scene a few years ago with little fanfare, but e-readers are quickly becoming the latest must-have in the world of electronics and cool tech gadgets. The Kindle is to books what the MP3 player is to music. The Kindle was the first of its kind to be taken seriously. Electronic readers take all the best things from books and computers, merges them together and lo and behold you get a hand held book reader called the Kindle. Many tried and true book lovers said that they preferred the old-fashioned method of reading books; after all, how can you replace the beloved book with a small electronic gizmo?
Quite easily apparently, as the Kindle is turning even the most resistant book worms into e-reader die hards. Book lovers are starting to admit grudgingly that maybe this e-reader thing is not a bad idea. Imagine being able to take your whole library with you on vacation and not need an extra suitcase. You could read a different book every day lying on the beach with just a touch of a button. You might even see them replacing text books in the schools soon. A high school in Florida is currently testing the Kindle out with their students and it is receiving high marks.
Barnes and Noble has its own version called the Nook. The Nook is the closest competitor for the Kindle and they are similar in their features. The price tags for both are very competitive. However, there are some differences that might make one a better choice for you.
Kindle Speed and Battery Life
The Kindle seems to have a bit of an edge over the Nook in both areas. Some even seem to be frustrated with the Nook's slow loading speed. The Nook's
touch screen feature for page turning can be a bit twitchy. With the release of the 3rd generation of both readers, the Amazon buries Barnes and Noble with its 30-day battery life compared to the Nook's ten-day.
Kindle vs Nook Price and Content
They appear to be comparable in price to one another, both having brought their prices down to around $140 for the basic models. As for content, Amazon offers more of a selection, but with city and county libraries moving into the electronic age, and the Nook's ability to download content from them, that might be a
moot point.
Kindle vs Nook Features
The Nook has a
touch screen feature for turning pages and navigating through the device, Kindle is still relying on push buttons. The Kindle can access the internet worldwide, whereas the Nook can only be used in the U.S.
The next e-reader on the scene is the Sony PRS-950. Sony brought their version of the e-reader on to the stage a bit later than the other two top competitors, so people are still trying to make up their minds on it. So far things look good for this little reader.
Kindle Speed and Battery Life
Speed seems to be a close match to the Kindle. However, the
Kindle still edges out the Sony with its 30-day battery life. The best that Sony can manage is 22 days.
Kindle Price and Content
The Sony 950 is a bit higher priced than the Kindle at roughly $240, but you need to look at some of the features to understand that there is a reason for the higher price. So far Sony is limited to just the Sony library, which has fewer titles to choose from then Amazon. Prices for content in the Sony store can be higher priced then the Amazon.
Features
The Sony has a larger screen by one full inch, and still manages to be lighter in weight. You are able to change views on the Sony. If you do not like the thin tall portrait view you can choose landscape, viewing two pages at once. The Sony reader is only available for U.S. use at this time. When it comes to purchasing an e-reader it really all just comes down to the features you want, and it seems that for the price you pay for the Kindle, it is the best deal out there.
